PharmaSpark 2026: Empowering Future Pharmacy Leaders Through Innovation and Excellence

The future of healthcare depends on a new generation of professionals who possess not only strong academic knowledge but also the creativity, leadership, and problem-solving skills required to address complex healthcare challenges. As pharmacy practice continues to evolve in response to advances in science, technology, and public health, educational institutions and development organisations play an increasingly important role in preparing students for leadership beyond the classroom.

Recognising this need, the Wilson Erhun Foundation for Pharmacy Administration (WEFPA) proudly supported the successful implementation of PharmaSpark 2026, an innovative educational initiative designed to inspire excellence, strengthen professional competencies, and cultivate the next generation of pharmacy leaders through academic competition, innovation, and collaborative learning.

Implemented in collaboration with the Pharmaceutical Association of Nigerian Students (PANS), Obafemi Awolowo University, PharmaSpark commenced in 2025. The 2026 edition provided pharmacy students with a unique platform to demonstrate their knowledge, develop innovative solutions to real-world healthcare challenges, and build the leadership skills required to thrive in an increasingly dynamic pharmaceutical landscape.

Preparing Future Leaders for a Changing Profession

Today’s pharmacists are expected to do far more than dispense medicines. They are innovators, researchers, public health advocates, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and healthcare leaders who must navigate an increasingly complex healthcare environment.

Preparing students for these evolving responsibilities requires educational experiences that extend beyond traditional classroom instruction. Future professionals must be equipped with the ability to analyse problems critically, work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, communicate ideas confidently, and develop practical solutions that improve patient care and strengthen healthcare systems.

Recognising these realities, PharmaSpark was designed as an experiential learning initiative that combines academic excellence with innovation, ensuring participants develop competencies that will remain relevant throughout their professional careers.

By creating opportunities for students to apply their knowledge in practical settings, WEFPA continues to demonstrate its commitment to developing healthcare professionals who are prepared to lead positive change across Nigeria and Africa.

Bridging Academic Learning with Real-World Innovation

PharmaSpark 2026 brought together pharmacy students from Part I to Part V, creating an engaging environment where learning extended beyond lectures and examinations.

Seven multidisciplinary teams participated in the competition, beginning with a preliminary stage that assessed participants’ academic knowledge through a structured quiz competition. The highest-performing teams advanced to the grand finale held on 25 June 2026, where they competed in two equally weighted components: an intensive academic quiz and a pharmaceutical industry hackathon.

The hackathon distinguished PharmaSpark from conventional student competitions. Rather than focusing solely on theoretical knowledge, participants were challenged to develop innovative solutions to pressing issues affecting Nigeria’s pharmaceutical manufacturing sector. Working collaboratively under time constraints, teams researched industry challenges, analysed available evidence, and proposed practical interventions capable of improving pharmaceutical production, access to medicines, and healthcare delivery.

This approach encouraged students to integrate scientific knowledge with creativity, critical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication while addressing challenges with significant implications for public health.

Celebrating Excellence and Innovation

The competition showcased the remarkable talent, passion, and innovative capacity of pharmacy students at Obafemi Awolowo University.

Following a highly competitive finale, Team Legend emerged as the overall champion, demonstrating exceptional performance across both the academic quiz and innovation challenge. Team Phaim secured second place, while Team Merit finished third.

Winning teams received medals and cash prizes in recognition of their outstanding achievements, while every participant was presented with a Certificate of Participation, acknowledging their commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and professional growth.

Although the competition recognised outstanding performances, its greatest achievement lay in creating an environment where every participant had the opportunity to learn, collaborate, and develop practical competencies that extend well beyond the competition itself.

Building Skills That Matter

PharmaSpark delivered outcomes that reached far beyond academic performance.

Throughout the programme, participants strengthened critical competencies including leadership, communication, analytical reasoning, teamwork, presentation skills, research, and creative problem-solving. These capabilities are increasingly recognised as essential attributes for healthcare professionals working within rapidly evolving healthcare systems.

The programme also encouraged participants to view challenges within the pharmaceutical sector as opportunities for innovation rather than barriers to progress. By exposing students to real industry issues, PharmaSpark fostered an entrepreneurial mindset that empowers future pharmacists to contribute actively to pharmaceutical manufacturing, medicines regulation, healthcare policy, research, and patient-centred care.

This emphasis on experiential learning aligns closely with WEFPA’s mission of strengthening healthcare systems through leadership development, professional education, and innovation.

Investing in the Future of Healthcare

For WEFPA, PharmaSpark represents far more than an academic competition. It is a strategic investment in human capital development and a practical demonstration of the Foundation’s belief that sustainable healthcare improvement begins with developing capable, confident, and innovative professionals.

By nurturing pharmacy students early in their careers, the Foundation is helping to build a workforce equipped to improve medicine use, strengthen pharmaceutical systems, promote research and innovation, and contribute meaningfully to national and regional healthcare development.

The programme also highlights the value of collaboration between academia, professional associations, development organisations, and industry. Such partnerships provide students with meaningful opportunities to engage with contemporary healthcare challenges while strengthening the connections between education and professional practice.

Looking Ahead

The success of PharmaSpark 2026 reinforces WEFPA’s commitment to creating educational opportunities that inspire excellence, encourage innovation, and prepare future healthcare leaders to address Africa’s most pressing pharmaceutical challenges.

The Foundation envisions expanding PharmaSpark to additional pharmacy schools across Nigeria and the West African region, creating broader opportunities for students to engage in collaborative learning, mentorship, innovation, and research. Future editions aim to strengthen industry partnerships, provide mentorship from experienced professionals, establish innovation grants, and support the development of outstanding student ideas into projects capable of delivering measurable public health impact.

Achieving this vision will require continued collaboration with universities, professional bodies, corporate organisations, philanthropic foundations, and development partners who share WEFPA’s commitment to strengthening healthcare through education and leadership.

PharmaSpark demonstrates what is possible when young professionals are challenged to think creatively, collaborate effectively, and apply their knowledge to solving real-world problems. Through initiatives such as this, WEFPA is cultivating a generation of pharmacy leaders, innovators, researchers, and change-makers whose ideas, passion, and expertise will contribute to stronger pharmaceutical systems, healthier communities, and a more resilient healthcare future across Africa.
